U3A Douglas Shire is part of the worldwide network of Third Age “universities” which started at the University Of Toulouse, France in 1973. The Third Age incorporates people who are retired or semi-retired, and typically over the age of 50. Recent studies have shown that U3A is making a substantial contribution to society by helping its members to remain healthy and active for longer. U3A Douglas Shire formed in 2021 as a branch of the U3A Cairns. On April 24, 2023 members voted to become an independent branch of U3A.
